Technology Reviews

The second generation of Pixel Buds was just introduced by Google at an event in the US, besides the Pixel 4 duo, Google also launched Pixel Buds 2 – a true wireless Bluetooth headset and promise to be a formidable rival of Apple AirPods.

This is an upgraded version of the first Pixel Buds launched in 2017. The new Pixel Buds have a more compact design. The device’s box has an egg-like shape and is only white. While the headset, users have up to 4 color options to choose from, including Clearly White, Oh So Orange, Quite Mint and Recent Black.

Unlike AirPods, Pixel Buds 2 will fit in the user’s ears. Its design looks similar to Samsung’s Galaxy Buds. The headset also comes with rubber buttons so that users can replace and choose the appropriate size.

Google says the design of the Pixel Buds 2 ensures it can block almost any ambient noise. This new wireless headset also features Adaptive Sound, which automatically adjusts the volume emitted depending on the surrounding environment.

Each earpiece also has a built-in microphone to improve user voice acquisition during calls.

In particular, Pixel Buds 2 is also equipped with sweat and water resistance – features that Apple’s AirPods are missing. Like the first-generation Pixel Buds, this device still has Google Assistant built in. This means users can order a virtual assistant by saying “Hey Google” or “Okay Google”.

Adaptive Sound feature can adjust the volume flexibly when users go through different environments. The call experience is also better with two microphones in each earcup eliminating external noise. Even the product also integrates an accelerometer to detect speech through the vibrations of the jawbone.

The new Pixel Buds can translate multiple languages in real time, check messages, read messages aloud to users. Google said the product has the ability to automatically adjust the sound, volume in accordance with user ambient noise. These are things that are not yet available on any wireless headset.

The battery of the headset can play music continuously for 5 hours. Meanwhile, the included charging box can power the new Pixel Buds to work for up to 24 hours. The box of this device also supports wireless charging. According to Google, Pixel Buds 2 is capable of long-range Bluetooth connectivity. Headsets can be connected to phones about 3 rooms indoors and everywhere on an outdoor soccer field.

In addition, the product is also equipped with aptX HD, so it can play Hi-Res music (high quality music). This is a plus for Pixel Buds 2 because some competitors like AirPods 2 or even Sony WF-1000XM3 do not have this feature.

The 2nd generation Pixel Buds will officially go on sale in early 2020 for $179. At this price, the device will compete directly with AirPods 2 ($199). The new Pixel Buds come with a compact design, comes with smart features and good sound quality. This is considered one of the notable wireless headphones launched in the second half of 2019.
